I spilled most of a jar of purple silk paint on the kitchen floor this morning while trying to make a banner for Elena. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to salvage enough dye to finish her silk and thus the project is pretty much ruined. If I try to go back and paint later, it will look like crap.

Then I had to clean up the mess. The kitchen table had me worried, but I was able to get most of it with the cleaner and then I buffed the rest of the remnants out of the finish with a green scrubbie pad. The floor appeared to be a lost cause. I tried a couple cleaners we had around the house on it, but to no avail. So, I made a trip to the store and grabbed some heavier duty stuff (and some wood finish to re-seal the kitchen table after I buffed it). The heavy duty stuff appears to have removed most of it.

I'll have to have someone who is not colorblind take a look at it to see what spots I missed, but the vast majority is done.

Tonight sucked.

I've been tagged by Liria! It's my turn to:

1. Find the nearest book.
2. Name the book & the author.
3. Turn to page 123.
4. Go to the fifth sentence on the page. Copy out the next three sentences and post to your blog.
5. Tag three more folks.

Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heros
by Edith Hamilton

She thought the second wife would try to kill him so that her own son could inherit the kingdom, and she was right. This second wife came from a great family. Her father was Cadmus, the excellent King of Thebes; her mother and her three sisters were women of blameless lives.

The quick up front news is that the house which Elena and I have made an offer on has gone through all of its little trials and tribulations and we will close on it mid-April.

On to the war!

  • Bought a cheap 40" rapier from Zen Warrior the first day as well as some nice gloves.

  • Returned gloves, because the seam cut through the leather at a stress point where the finger bends. Got a new pair.

  • Second pair did the same thing.

  • Taped second pair and fought the week.

  • We need a bigger tent for all of Elena's archery stuff, my rapier stuff, and all of our combined clothing and day to day gear.

  • Bought a little recurve for shooting at practices and hanging out with Elena on the archery field from time to time.

  • The lady in our camp who was in charge of cooking and such did a wonderful job and kept us well-fed during the week. She was amazed at how much our little group could eat after some hard days.

  • Did some looking at heavy armour and prices. Not buying in the near future, but getting some estimates of cost.

  • Need to buy and wear hiking socks at war so that my feet aren't killing me after the second day.

  • Played in the 'Combat Archery vs Rapier' experiment. It was interesting. It is definitely easier to tell you've been shot with those instead of a rubber-band-gun (RBG). The archers were amazed at how easy it was to move in the rapier armor and how much easier it was to bend over and pick up arrows after the melees.

  • Talked to the combat archery people and found out how inexpensive it is to get a crossbow built... and how expensive it is to keep yourself in bolts.

  • I killed Her Royal Majesty Ansteorra during the town scenario battle... Runolfr owes me a drink. Otherwise, the little scenario of 'The Streets of Verona' was pretty neat. The 'Governor' has outlawed dueling in Verona and if you are caught, then you are sent to jail (dead). Otherwise, it is a regeneration (not resurrection) battle with a lot of role-playing and talking added in. Like I said, it it was pretty neat.

  • Albert 'Red Hands' Lancaster, who is with our Shire while at college at Frist, won the rapier novice tourney. I had one good fight and two bad ones. I was just happy to kill the tall guy in the list.

  • Did a little blacksmithing. I went to the required intro class and then hit the joinery class the next day. I never did get my set of tongs finished. As the week went on, I kept getting less and less likely to stand up and go somewhere, because of hurting feet. Hopefully, I'll take better care of my feet early on and can skip a couple fights to go play blacksmith.

  • Kept being surprised by running into people that I either knew or recognized as well as being recognized in return.

  • The melees were okay, but I didn't do all that well. I was basically a meat-shield. Hopefully, I'll do a bit better next year.

  • After the last rapier event for the week was done with, Hawk authorized me in case. I'm going to be practicing buckler and cloak over the next couple weeks and then make a run down to Huntsville one Sunday when An Dun Thiene is having a big practice to see if I can authorize in those (Corbin can technically authorize now, but they said it looks bad if your direct teacher is the one authorizing you).

Overall, I had a lot of fun. It was nice to just get away from everything for a week and have the only thing you're worried about is if you still have enough Advil for the rest of the week. ;)

Switching over to a real account on livejournal to have access to a couple different groups. Will most likely not be posting very much here.
